Micachu & the Shapes - “Vulture”
Another year, another batch of best-of lists, then? Like Bill said: not quite. Rather than trying to identify the best albums of the year, we’d much rather share our favourite albums this year. Which is great for me, because thanks to a lot of travelling, I barely listened to anything released in the last 6 months of this year; you’ll note that most of my favourites this were released before June or July. In no particular order, let’s get on with this.
Richard’s Favourites of 2009:
No big surprises here. I could have sworn Insides was a 2008 release, so I’m glad I checked that, because it really was one of my favourite releases this year. Bitte Orca was a late bloomer for me, but I’m very happy that I eventually gave it a proper chance. I’ve posted a Micachu track along with this because, despite the early hype at the beginning of the year, everyone seemed to forget about her as the year wore on, and I think that’s a shame.
My resolutions for the new year are definitely going to include not only catching up on this year’s music, but making sure I keep up on what 2010 has to offer.
Richard Swift - “Lady Luck” *
Well, it’s that time of year again. You know this time of year: when all the music blogs get together and decide how they’re all going to post the same 10 albums in different orders, with maybe one or two curveballs thrown in for ‘flair’.
Tuneage will of course participate in this year-end
circle-jerk round-up, but we like to think ours is slightly different. First, we don’t post a single list (we’re far too lazy to get together to come up with a single list and argue over whether Merriweather Post Pavilion was really better than Veckatimest or just better hyped). Second, we’re posting our favorite albums of the year. Sure, they may not be the best (technically speaking), but they’re the ones we enjoyed the most…and I’d rather hear about the music someone really liked, rather than what they appreciate for its technical merits.
OK, enough babbling, here are my favorite albums of 2009 (in alphabetical order)…
Bill’s Favorites of 2009:
Much like last year’s list, I don’t think there’s much surprise here, but I’ve listened to each of these albums a few dozen times each over the course of the year and I have yet to grow tired of any of them. And if that’s not enjoying an album, I don’t know what is.
* Although his album, The Atlantic Ocean, didn’t quite make my favorites-of-the-year list,”Lady Luck” was easily one of my favorite songs of the year and somehow hadn’t been posted here yet. Oops, that makes two of these this week.
You know when I said a couple of weeks ago that it was a good week to blow all your money on music? Well, that was a good week, but this week is even better and is going to cost you even more money. We’d apologize for your being broke if we weren’t completely wasted on good tunes…
The XX - “VCR”
This post has been a long time coming. I’ve been listening to their album (also available in MP3 format) for weeks, and so have at least two other members of Tuneage and almost the entire internet. So what’s the hold up? Well let me put it this way: which fucking track do I post? The whole album is just great.
With the level of hype breakout artists recieve from bloggers, it’s easy to be cynical, but The XX — a band with an average age of just 19 — are one of the most deserving recipients of the hype that I’ve heard in some time. You’d be a fool to skip this one.
