Slapstick - There’s a Metal Head in the Parking Lot

If you play the 6 degrees game with any band that came from the 1990’s, eventually you would make it back to Slapstick. Slapstick was a ska/punk outfit from Chicago in the mid-1990’s and from their ranks emerged bands like Less Than Jake and Alkaline Trio.

If you linger around the threads long enough you’ll find your way to bands like MU330, Hot Water Music, The Ataris, and The Get Up Kids. What do these all have in common, besides the great bastion of 1990’s rock music: The Vans Warped Tour? They all dominated my CD player when I was in high school.

They evoke the suburban sprawl and listlessness that so much of the 90’s were about. I don’t feel any pangs of nostalgia for these bands and their songs — this is just simply the way it was.
