The Jesus and Mary Chain - Sometimes Always
Since I started this week with a duet, I thought why not continue with the theme and share some of my other favorite musical pairings. 1994’s “Sometimes Always” is a sweet and simple break-up tale sung by JAMC’s Jim Reid and Mazzy Star’s Hope Sandoval.
This isn’t the noise-pop assault of JAMC’s Psychocandy era. Rather, it’s the sort of tune you’d play on an overcast Sunday morning while still trying to rub the sleep out of your eyes.

Asobi Seksu - Thursday
I thought as my first post on Tuneage I would toss up one of my all time favorite jams, from New York City’s Asobi Seksu—direct descendants of shoegazer pop but with a little more edge (think Portishead on caffeine). The band is three people, Yuki Chikudate (vocals), James Hanna (guitar) and Ben Shapiro (drums), and one has to assume Yuki was responsible for the name, which translates into “playful sex,” should you ever need to say that phrase in Japanese.
This song (produced by Chris Zane, who coincidentally made the White Rabbits’ record, which has also been featured on this blog) is EPIC. It builds and builds and doesn’t let you down. I also love songs that are a little withholding, but I’m always searching for the rare gem that really satisfies. And after listening to this, you feel like you have a full belly…musically speaking.

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Happy When It Rains
I’ve spent an abnormally large portion of my day today listening to The Magnetic Fields’ latest album, Distortion, the whole time thinking it reminded me of Darklands-era Jesus and Mary Chain. So, I went “catalog diving” and dug up my favorite track from Darklands.
For a song as downtrodden as it is, it feels remarkably upbeat. The Jesus and Mary Chain also toned down their signature fuzz for this song, and I think that’s a good thing. Enjoy.
