In Cadeo - “The Archer”

In Cadeo is another band I learned about through NPR. They hail from Brooklyn, NY and play a kind of power pop that’s perfect for the summer months.

“The Archer”, the lead track from their self-titled EP (available for free from their official site), begins with a pleasant guitar hook that gives way to distortion-heavy riff and toe-tapping rhythm. Prepare to play this song in your head for at least a few hours today…I know I have been.

The Booze - “Broken Hearted Man”

I’ve posted The Booze quite a few times on my own blog. I can’t help but love the 60’s inspired garage/mod rock that this Atlanta, GA quintet create—they’re definitely influenced by early Beatles, Who, Stones, etc. This song is off their most recent album, Straight, No Chaser which came out in April and is available through iTunes.

Show plug: They’re playing tomorrow night in NYC at Pianos. If you dig this, come see them live. They’re a great band to dance to and really fun to watch.  Check out their Myspace page for other tour dates.

Thin Lizzy - “The Rocker”

Forget about “The Boys Are Back In Town.”  This tune showcases the true genius of Phil Lynott and his Irish brethren.  Throw on some shades, grab an imaginary mic, and get your rock leg going on this miserable Monday.

I’m a Rocker!  I’m a roller too baby.

The B-52s - “Mesopotamia”

I consider this song the ultimate B-52s track, and its slinky rhythms and catchy, inane chorus about the beginnings of civilization are perfect for summertime play. This song along with five others comprise the remaining material of what was intended as a third album. The David Byrne-helmed recording sessions were, ultimately, not successful and the band released the output from their scrapped project as an EP. With a song this amazing, it makes you wonder what other brilliance could have resulted from their Byrne collaboration if they had been willing to see it through without murdering one another.

My Morning Jacket - “Smokin’ From Shootin’”

Officially released yesterday, the 15-song Evil Urges contains some amazing new tracks (and a few that could probably have been left off). MMJ sports some brand new vocal production techniques but sticks with their distinctive ‘reverb-soaked’ style to create a record that can both lull and energize you. Enjoy this track and be sure to pick up the album!

What have been your favorite songs from this record, if for some reason this isn’t the first time hearing?

The Beatles - “Within You Without You/Tomorrow Never Knows”

I think it’s really important to understand this song. There’s a reason why it’s on the Beatles Love album. My own interpretation is that some people eloquently make their emotions explicit through language. Other people may be more subtle, expressing themselves in ways more natural for them. Regardless of where anyone is on this spectrum, we all love to share music. Maybe that’s what makes us speak the same language.

Debuting at #1 on the United World Chart in 2006, Love is a seamless, comprehensive Beatles experience that is best felt if it surrounds you. Producer George Martin created unique layers of all original Beatles tracks with no new recordings. It’s fortified Beatles.

Heartless Bastards - “Done Got Old”

If you’ve ever washed the stamp off your hand just to see if the bartender ID’s you again, then this song is for you. If I’m the only one who does that, and you simply want to hear a young woman who sounds like Janis Joplin, then here. Erika Wennerstrom and her band, Heartless Bastards, are currently in the studio working on a third album with producer Mike McCarthy (Spoon). They’ve opened for Wilco, and they played at SXSW 2005. The lyrics are soulful just like her voice, and she plays the guitar and piano. She’s much closer to 30 than she is to 20 in case you were wondering.

Bo Diddley - Who Do You Love?

(December 30, 1928 - June 2, 2008)

The Bo Diddley beat goes on.

Bo Diddley - “Before You Accuse Me (Take A Look At Yourself)”

One of the greatest persons ever to make music has passed away today.  Bo Diddley laid the foundation for raucous rock n roll styles and sensibilities.

Tuneage salutes you Bo, you will be missed.

“I opened the door for a lot of people, and they just ran through and left me holding the knob.” - Bo Diddley

The Virgins - “Private Affair” (Daytrotter Session)

I’ve been waiting for The Virgins to release a full length album for a while now, and the wait will soon be over. June 3rd (pre-order it here). But in the meantime, they’ve done a Daytrotter session. The session features three songs off their 2007 EP — including a heavily rewritten version of “Love is Colder Than Death” — a previously unreleased song called “Va Va Virgins” that they wrote while on tour with Ra Ra Riot, and “Private Affair”, which I’ve uploaded here.

The song was new to me, but it’s been on their Myspace for a while. (Edit: I just noticed a whole host of other new songs on their MySpace since posting this this morning.)

Previous coverage of The Virgins on Tuneage is here.
