Clinic - “The Majestic #2”

Clinic is always in my shuffle because I like organs, guitars, and a nice bassline. I would describe them as raw all the way through and creatively hard most of the time. They’re great live, they wear surgical masks, and I can’t really compare them to any other band. My absinthe brewer friend who we call Sideshow Bob turned me onto these guys, and he always tried to argue that Radiohead ripped their later style off this band.

It’s challenging to pick one song from five good albums, so I picked a mellow track from Winchester Cathedral. It’s a beautiful song, and I wish I knew all the words. “The Majestic #2” makes #2 sound good. Clinic released a new album Do It! in April.

Future Islands - Nu Autobahn

Future Islands are a two year old, Baltimore-based band from North Carolina without a Wikipedia entry. This track is self-released off their debut EP. I saw them perform at a small venue last night and wow! When they started playing, the stage was a vacuum. If you don’t believe me, check out last night’s video of this song. Yeah, that’s the singer right there in the middle of it all. The sound was so dancin’ happy. If Animal Collective could breed with the Unicorns, you might get Future Islands. The official release of Future Island’s first full length album Wave Like Home is in July. This album is already self-released, but I didn’t stay around long enough to get it. I will see them again in August.

Cristina - Is That All There Is?

Cristina Monet recorded this cover of the Peggy Lee classic way back in 1980. Although it wasn’t realeased for some time, after the song’s original composers, apparently rather offended at Cristina’s judicious alteration of the lyrics (“And then I fell in love with the most wonderful boy in Manhattan, we’d take long walks down the river, and he beat me black and blue, and I loved it”), sued.

Despite how long ago this was recorded, it really doesn’t sound dated at all. It’s got a really infectious disco/polka sound to it that would surely have the contents of any New York club up and dancing.

Tapes ‘n Tapes - Headshock

tnt

Tapes ‘n Tapes are based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I just got this album 2 days ago, and think its great! Very catchy, and full of variety. Vocally, some songs kind of remind me of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

This track is off their most current release, Walk It Off, due out on April 8 on XL Records. They’ll be playing an in store on April 8 at the Virgin Megastore in Union Square. All the info is on their website, linked above.

If you like what you hear, keep your eyes and ears open. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot from these guys.

Justice - DVNO (Tonics Jurkin’ edit)

This edit of Justice’s DVNO comes from The Subs’ Tonic, combining the original version and Surkin’s excellent remix. It’s a remix of a remix — a threemix! We posted the video for DVNO a few weeks ago, if you want to hear the original.

And, because it’s such a frequent question, this is what DVNO means, courtesy of Justice’s Xavier de Rosnay:

In every suburb of the world, in every city, there’s always a nightclub called El Divino […] Clubs where you have to wear like a white shirt to get in.

Sublime - 54-46 That’s My Number/Ball & Chain

It is gorgeous out in NYC today! I feel compelled to abandon my theme and just post this tune!! I heard it last night at my friend Matt’s place in Brooklyn before heading to Tea Lounge for a jazz/funk/experimental show. That show was great but I could not stop grooving to this song.

Cheers!!

(Much props to Toots & The Maytals as well for writing perfect reggae jams)

The Virgins - Fernando Pando

New York’s The Virgins were one of my favourite discoveries of last year, after hearing their track “Rich Girls” on some podcast-or-other, and subsequently the rest of their EP. You’ll probably remember an episode of Gossip Girl from last year that featured every single track from the EP, too — if that isn’t a glowing testimonial, I don’t know what is. “Fernando Pando” is the third track from their current EP. Great no-frills, catchy-as-hell indie-pop.

They’re at SXSW this week, of course. They’ll be at Cedar door tomorrow at 8pm, and Wave Rooftop on Saturday at 1am. Their SXSW profile is here, where you can also download “Rich Girls”.

I posted this for Richard, whose internet is on the blink.

Be Your Own Pet - Becky

My favourite song for the next 5 minutes.

Teenage girls fall out every day, and it’s always fraught with ridiculous drama. Be Your Own Pet take that anguish and turn it into a brilliant mocking story of teenage homicide (“It doesn’t matter anyway, because I’ve got a brand new friend ok / Me and her, we’ll kick your ass, we’ll wait with knives after class”).

Vampire Weekend - A-Punk

It’s hard to find a band as fun as Vampire Weekend. You literally CAN’T feel upset when you are listening to these guys. I’ve been dying to post something from them all day, but already used up my song post. Fortunately, I circumvented the system, and found an awesome video for you. I hope you enjoy; I certainly do.

Justice - DVNO

The music video for Justice’s DVNO. This is such an excellent music video; it’s so fucking retro (if you’ll pardon my language) and perfectly-executed. I know the graphic designers are going to be all over this, heaping praise upon it.

And if you love it as much as I do, you’ll want to download the full-size, high resolution versions available from here, if you use the username “justice” and password “dvno”.
