In Cadeo - “The Archer”
In Cadeo is another band I learned about through NPR. They hail from Brooklyn, NY and play a kind of power pop that’s perfect for the summer months.
“The Archer”, the lead track from their self-titled EP (available for free from their official site), begins with a pleasant guitar hook that gives way to distortion-heavy riff and toe-tapping rhythm. Prepare to play this song in your head for at least a few hours today…I know I have been.
Weezer - “The Greatest Man That Ever Lived”
Here is a track off of the new Weezer album. Clocking in at just under 6 minutes, you get everything from Rivers rapping, a shaker hymn, some Queen inspired falsetto, and then some typical sounding Weezer power chords.
At about 3:33, it sounds reminiscent of Pink Triangle. Then it goes into Rivers spoken word, followed by some Gregorian Chant and finishes up with a Weezer-esque ending.
I enjoy the variations in this song, but part of me just wants straight up Weezer. The album isn’t bad per se, but it’s certainly different. The end to this song certainly makes me miss that sound.
I posted another new track off the Red Album on my own tumblelog.
I’m certainly curious as to what people think of this track, so leave plenty of comments!
Artful Dodger - Wayside
As a adult, there are certain memories that are embedded in your memory. The first time you lost a tooth, your first crush, the first time you danced around in a diaper on some yellow shag carpet to a really good song… things like that. For me, the latter happened while listening to Artful Dodger’s 1975, self titled release (not to be confused with the UK garage band) . To this day, for reasons that still can not describe, I know (almost) every word to just about every track on this album.
Now, I understand that this album won’t carry the same nostalgia for most of you but putting that aside, you are left with 10 fun, strong, very singable songs that are great for any occasion… everything from road trips to house cleaning.
Super Furry Animals - Suckers!
“Tell me you’re a phoenix”
I was extremely disappointed with myself when I first heard SFA. How did a band this wild completely miss me during my ‘spongey’ early days of music discovery? The answer, for better or worse of course, is the prevalence of Grunge and the lack of Internet access at the time. Welsh Alt-Psychedelic bands had yet to grace my radar…
Regardless, I am always happy to hear bands like this one, quirky, silly, sarcastic, and just plain weird.
