Lee Hazlewood & Nancy Sinatra - Some Velvet Morning

Several bands/musicians have covered “Some Velvet Morning” including shoegazers Slowdive and Primal Scream (with Kate Moss). This 60s psychedelic classic has entranced generation after generation because of its trippy, mystical sound and its mysterious lyrics about the dichotomous relationship that exists between the sexes.

Hazlewood sings about a goddess named Phaedra who “gave him life.” Sinatra assumes the role of this Phaedra woman and her verses are filled with pretty images of the natural world. Hazlewood’s direct and solemn manner of singing juxtaposes the languid, whimsical vocals of Sinatra as if they are emboding gender stereotypes and competing to tell this love story the way they see it. It’s not a complicated love story, just the tale of Man and Woman. No wonder the song remains timeless.

Of course it could just be about drugs, which could also explain its staying power.
