Okay, okay, summer is winding to a close and this post is overdue but us tuneage folks have been busy! Sort of.
I, intentionally, spent this summer reading a lot of biographies and memoirs by musicians and figured I’d give out a few recommendations to fellow music lovers. While I read some works by less well known artists (such as A Pure Drop: The Life of Jeff Buckley by Jeff Apter). But I feel that when you have a basic grasp of someone’s career and their image, the biography is much more enjoyable.
The following are the ones I found either the most brutally honest, hilarious and insightful. I especially enjoyed Life - with its tongue-in-cheek, British attitude.
Dolly Parton - “Jolene”
Oh no, Dolly ain’t jealous! And she certainly paints Jolene beautifully. My best friend during high school always had her albums in the car, and I’d bet that everyone in coal country loves her. I had to post the original Jolene with all the covers out there.
Here’s a live performance of hers that’s kinda funny. Don’t even act like y’all don’t like a little country.
