James Taylor - Country Road
It’s Mother’s Day! Best wishes to all the moms, grandmas, great-grandmas, surrogates, and baby mamas out there. Your love and kindness makes us all who we are, and we at Tuneage would like to thank you for that!
One of the greatest experiences ever for me was when Mom and I saw James Taylor at MSG Theater, 4th row center. Having grown up with him, Billy Joel, Neil Young, and Carol King playing around the house, I developed a strong connection between JT and my family. It was emotional and fun - Happy Mother’s Day Mom!
What artists or songs did your Mom offer you?
Dixie Chicks - Everybody Knows
One of the reblogs from our podcast post called us out for not posting any country music. Now I have no affinity for country, but I absolutely recognize its insane-o popularity throughout the rest of the country nation. The track above, off their Grammy sweeping record “Taking The Long Road,” is not only a great country track, but a great song altogether. My favorite parts are Natalie Maines’ hair-raising, goosebump-inducing vocals, and the dreamy twang of the pedal steel. Click play y’all!
If you’re into country, give us some recommendations!

Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen - Hot Rod Lincoln
A coworker and I started talking about the best car songs this morning. I cast my vote for Little Deuce Coupe by the Beach Boys, and he cast his for a song I’d never heard, Hot Rod Lincoln by Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen. Once we tracked down the song, a shadow of doubt was cast upon my vote: Hot Rod Lincoln was a pretty fun song.
The song is a quick-paced, “insurgent country” tune that reminds me a bit of ZZ Top and Charlie Daniels. Plus, with an opening lyric like “My daddy said boy you’re gonna drive me to drinkin’ if you don’t stop driving that Hot Rod Lincoln”, how can possibly you go wrong?
The Color Cast - Dancing Upstairs
I saw The Color Cast several years ago at the Hi-Tone in Memphis. Their sound makes me feel like I’m in some post-apocalyptic gunslingin’ society where smoke and dust poison the air. This song is from their appropriately named EP, Three Song EP, which I’ll post to my tumblelog later. I’m not really sure what happened to these guys, but I hope they return with guns a-blazin’.
The Boy Least Likely To - A Balloon on a Broken String
The Boy Least Likely To aren’t difficult to describe: they’re upbeat, they’re playful, they’re fun, and they’re good. In fact, I like to think that if all the Fischer-Price toys I owned as a kid magically started playing excellent music, it would sound a lot like The Boy Least Likely To.
TBLLT’s 2005 release, The Best Party Ever is one of my favorite albums in recent memory, and I’ve been itching for new material ever since. Well, TBLLT recently released two new tracks to their MySpace page, and I’m happy to say that their sound hasn’t changed much. It’s grown up a little, but maintains all the childish playfulness that made the The Best Party Ever so much fun, and this is a good thing.
Bonus: When you’re done with the song above, check out my favorite track from their first album; it’s called I See Spiders When I Close My Eyes.
