Bon Iver - “Blood Bank”
Since it’s New Years day and most people are probably nursing epic hangovers, we’ll take extra care to ensure today’s tune won’t aggravate that headache. The release of Bon Iver’s Blood Bank EP is rapidly approaching (look for it Jan. 20th on JagJaguwar), and if you’re anything like me, waiting to hear new Bon Iver material has you almost completely undone.
My biggest fear was that For Emma, Forever Ago was so good that Justin Vernon’s next effort would inevitably disappoint. Thankfully, though, the EP’s title track allays those fears. Dropping the falsetto and sounding fuller (read: better produced) than the songs on For Emma, “Blood Bank” retains all the intimacy and emotion that initially drew me in.
I can’t think of a better way to start the new year than with a (hangover-friendly) track that proves Justin Vernon is just getting started.
Tuneage favorite Bon Iver’s much loved album For Emma, Forever Ago is on sale through amazonmp3 today only for $2.99.
If you need a refresher you can find the previous Tuneage coverage of the single “Flume” here and the Daytrotter Session version here. As we said in the beginning, “a guy, a guitar, and intimate vocals.”
Bon Iver - “Flume” (from their Daytrotter session)
Daytrotter posted a session with Bon Iver today. We love Bon Iver. A lot. We posted “Flume” from their album For Emma, Forever Ago all the way back in February. This is their Daytrotter version, one of four songs from the album that they performed. The full session is here. Enjoy.
Bon Iver - Flume
If you ask me, Bon Iver (his real name is Justin Vernon) draws the most immediate comparison to artists like Iron and Wine, and that’s a good thing. Artists like these guys tend to be minimal in their approach: a guy, a guitar, and intimate vocals. Music like this works equally as well for a rainy/snowy day as it does for a random Sunday morning. Truthfully, I find myself throwing Bon Iver on the iPod anytime I want something relaxing that won’t dominate the space between my ears, and that’s pretty often these days.
Flume is the lead-off track to Bon Iver’s recently re-released debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, and you would be remiss not to buy yourself a copy. I cannot recommend this album highly enough.
When you’re done listening to Flume, you might also consider checking out Bon Iver’s tumblelog, Creature Fear.
