Dan Auerbach - “My Last Mistake

If you love the Black Keys like I do, then listen up: the Keys’ lead singer Dan Auerbach has a solo release called Keep It Hid on the way. On a scale from thickfreakness to Attack & Release, I’d say the album feels more like Attack & Release. Although the album sports some high-energy, Black Keys-esque blues at times, most of the album finds Auerbach scratching other musical itches. “My Last Mistake” is the first single from the upcoming album (set for release Feb 10th on Nonesuch), and vocally it’s pure Auerbach but musically the song feels more classic-rock/country. Sure, it’s not exactly what I was expecting from Auerbach, but that’s far from a bad thing.

The Black Keys - “Hard Row”

Since we enabled submissions, we’ve received mostly new music recommendations, but every now and again someone reminds us of great music we’ve so far failed to highlight. Suggested by Luis, The Black Keys are one of those bands.

The Black Keys is a simple band: two guys out of Akron, Ohio who make some of the best rock-blues music I can remember hearing. Distorted, gritty, and full of energy, the Black Keys simply deliver. “Hard Row” is the second track off of thickfreakness, their second album and a personal favorite, released in 2003 on Fat Possum Records.
