Thundercat - “Daylight

Out today on Brainfeeder, the uber-dope, uber-cool Thundercat has released his solo debut album, The Golden Age of Apocalypse. I’m already counting this as a favorite of 2011. He’s played bass for Erykah Badu, Flying Lotus, and Shafiq in addition to bass duties in the L.A. thrash metal outfit Suicidal Tendencies. But judging by the progressive, spaced-out awesomeness of Golden Age, it’s pretty clear that Thundercat is more than ready to foray out as a solo artist. He’s taken the jazz-strain inherent in L.A.’s beat scene and exploded forth to make it all his own, owing as much to past fusion luminaries as it does to Thundercat’s complex, galactic notion of the present and future.

The lead track off the album, a mind-shattering cover of George Duke’s “For Love I Come” already made the rounds earlier this year (and if you haven’t heard it, then give it a listen). I wanted to highlight something different, the first full-length track on the album “Daylight.” It’s airy and light, with funky keys and a bells set adding to the pleasant atmospherics. Thundercat himself is on vocals (as he is on several of Golden Age’s tracks). More than anything, “Daylight” just a swell upbeat opener that stands as a superb sonic (and even metaphoric) introduction to the cosmic future of one of the best new bassists.
