Micachu & The Shapes - “Golden Phone”
If you believe the hype, Mica Levi’s debut album is going to be on every critic’s best of 2009 list and is probably the most inventive thing to be released, ever. Hyperbole aside, Jewellery — produced by Matthew Herbert — is an excellent collection of music.
Micachu has been telling journalists that it’s a pop album, “in that it flutters around a few different styles,” which might be something of an understatement. There’s an intentional DIY quality to the music that Mica says is inspired by Harry Partch, who was known for making instruments out of things like lightbulbs and cloud chamber bowls. Jewellery includes “instruments” like glass bottles and a vacuum cleaner, and as inventive as this approach is, I find myself grateful that most of the tracks on the album are under 3 minutes long.
“Golden Phone” was the first single from the album, released by Accidental Records in August last year. You can buy the single from Amazon if you like, but you’ll have to wait until March 9th for Rough Trade to release the full album.
