Jeff Hanson - “Hiding Behind the Moon”

If you’re already listening to this song, I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, “What a goon, this chump uploaded the wrong song. I’ve never known any girls named Jeff…” And that’s what makes this artist unique: although the sound of the singing voice belies the gender, it’s not a girl singing, it’s a guy.

My favorite description of Jeff Hanson is, and I mean this in the best way possible, that he sounds the way Elliott Smith would sound if Smith were a girl. Jeff’s music is the same kind of introspective, 4-track-in-your-bedroom, indie guitar pop that made Smith so famous. Hanson has been a favorite for me recently, and I’m a little embarrassed I hadn’t given him much attention until now.

Although “Hiding Behind the Moon” comes from Hanson’s 2003 debut Son, his latest album, Madam Owl was just released this past August on Kill Rock Stars.
