Koufax - Let Us Know
For me, one of the biggest tests of a band is how many times I will listen to them before I get sick of, and eventually, forget about them. The band that has passed this test time and time again is Koufax. Their 2002 album Social Life is a staple in my summer music lineup (and their latest release Hard Times are in Fashion (2005) usually gets in there as well)
I first saw Koufax while they were touring in support of Social Life. I loved their piano and synth driven sound, solid rhythm section giving the songs substance and the sparse, yet eloquent, guitar work of lead singer and songwriter, Robert Suchan. More of a storyteller than a songwriter, Suchan manages suck you into the song’s meaning while hooking you with the music as well. Their lyrical narration doesn’t come as much of a surprise when you find out that at one point there was a Koufax Book Club (I have the button to prove it!). This band is not only musically talented but literate… which is more than can be said for most musicians.
As if all that wasn’t enough, they covered Joe Jackson’s 1982 classic “Steppin Out”. Now if that isn’t reason enough to check them out, I have no idea what is.
Those who regularly follow tuneage may not recognize me. I’m Dave. I am pretty excited to be able to share my favorite music with everyone. As far back as I can remember I was a Beatles fan (thanks Mom!) and that has, in some small way, contributed to my current musical appetite. I won’t classify my tastes except to say that I enjoy poppy, catchy songs. Harmonies are always welcome. That being said, there is a lot of music out there and I enjoy most of it. I hope you will too.
