Halos - A Rowboat In The Perfect Storm
When visiting friends on the West Coast, often times I find I just do not get the new bands they are listening too. Gutteral screams passing for vocals that can’t even be understood? Super fast, super muddy, super distorted guitar lines that I can barely listen to? I just don’t see how that music can be enjoyable. And of course, they will flinch as soon as I put on Fleet Foxes or something folky…
But Halos stands out. The band combines the emotive and straining vocal aspect that the SoCal bands haved honed, with a youth rooted in the east coast, classic rock, and deep love of family and friends. Dan Lyman, guitarist and songwriter, comes with a heartfelt voice and dynamite lyrics. The band ties it together with melodies you can hear. I like that in a band.
